For the past ten years, porn addiction has been turned into a scapegoat for so many interests on multiple levels. From the very top of the governments, which accused pornography addiction of the wear down of the moral fabric of our society, to self-help gurus that put all personal failure on porn, we’ve heard it all. But all those claims were never backed by hard science. The governing body of mental health, the DSMV manual used for the diagnostic of addiction by the American psychiatric community, never included such a thing as porn addiction.
You Can Always Stop Watching Porn
Dr. Kris Taylor from the University of Aukland, New Zeeland, has been stating that there is no such thing as porn addiction in the real meaning of the term. He suggests that what we call porn addiction in some me is nothing more but compulsive behavior that’s in no way rooted deep in the psyche of the individual. There is no such thing as porn withdrawal once an individual stops consuming porn.
And he also researched the process of giving up porn. It turns out that it is as easy as turning off your screen There is no long-term onset of any discomfort caused by the interruption of porn watching or masturbation.
How Did He Reach This Conclusion Over Porn Addiction?
Dr. Kris Taylor studied the trend of classifying porn addiction as an issue for men since 2016 when he noticed the trend of giving up on porn in the so-called “NoFap” communities. It was around 2016 when the term No Fap November was introduced. And it was also around the time when the self-help culture took over the internet. What he noticed is quite interesting. No claim was backed by scientific evidence for a so-called “Porn Addiction.”
He also suggests that testimonials of men noticing improvement in their lives once they’ve stopped watching porn and masturbating result from self-discipline and mindful control over one habit. It has nothing to do with some kind of mystical energy that is being lost once ejaculating from masturbating to pornography. Those who claim that porn has such a massive impact in a man’s life seem to put too much importance on the role of semen and erectile function in the relationship with those around us and with our professional goals. Some NoFap communities have been going as far as using semen retention as a nootropic, claiming that giving up masturbation can improve mental function and help you be more productive. We’re yet to get any scientific data on that. But most likely, such data will never surface. What we do have is data on the role of masturbation in reducing stress and anxiety, improving prostate function, and even helping fight off certain strains of cancer.
So, Should You Fap?
Of course! There’s nothing wrong with masturbation and porn as long as you’re not overdoing it. You should treat porn just like wine. There’s nothing wrong with a glass of wine every once in a while to help take the edge off. But don’t drown yourself in a pool full of liquor.
