Fortnite, not to be confused with the Fortnight, is a game that was created and released by Epic Games in 2017.
It comes in three-game versions that have the same basis but different gameplay.
One is Fortnite: Save the World which is a mmorpg-based game where teams of up to 4 fight off zombies to defend their forts, Fortnite Creative where gamers create their worlds and battle zones and Battle Royale which is the last player standing game.
While all the games are successful, the battle royale has had great success with over 125 million players joining in under a year and earning the company millions per month.
Fortnite
Considering Fortnite is only a few years old, it has become a strong contributor to the online world of battle royale.
Although its reviews were not great when it first came out, it has changed to become one of the best games on the net.
The game has been constantly morphing with new maps, weaponry and gameplay keeping gamers involved, playing and engaging.
If you do not play Fortnite you will probably know someone who does.
Basically, 100 gamers parachute into a shrinking map area and fight to become for the last person or team standing.
Players can game in solo mode, in twos or teams while creating buildings on the run.
Epic Games brought in a ping system and respawning for teams once it was introduced in another battle royale game called Apex Legends.
While these two things are not original to Fortnite, they certainly enhance the game.
The most original thing about Fortnite is the ability for players to build fortresses and other buildings from found material.
These buildings quickly change the game as gunfights between teams change to battles to build.
While this creation of buildings is a great part of the game, it actually can be a barrier for new players as there are a lot of controls to figure out.
Many players have been doing it since the game came out so those just joining are at a disadvantage.
The other issue that players may find is that the gunfights are not as strong or engaging as some other online battle royale games.
The shooting is only so-so and can lag.
However, if combined with build battles they tend to balance out since most other games do not have the latter.
The cool thing about Fortnite is its constant changes.
While this can really drive some of the longtime players nuts, it is great for most.
The game’s animations are good and the whole view is rich and detailed compared to when it was first released.
The game also is fun because once you know how to play you can integrate with others seamlessly whether you are a casual gamer or hardcore.
The game starts slow and then the battle begins.
Gunplay, building and avoiding a storm put the gaming pressure on.
The best moments are at the end of the battle royal due to the building mechanic.
Fortnite is always morphing often with multiple updates each week.
Some are small but others can change whole areas on maps, introduce new vehicles and gameplay modes.
New weapons are put into play and others removed.
However, these changes are often temporary but certainly change up the matches to various degrees.
Fortnite maps bring changes as well.
They may change the landscape with weather such as snow or maybe an area becomes covered in sand or lava.
Some areas are new altogether while old ones are knocked down.
Every season brings new changes with a different storyline.
Stories are coordinated with the map and have strange events that keep players intrigued and hooked on playing.
If you are a long-time Fortnite player, you will have enjoyed the changes and interesting twists that have occurred over the seasons of play.
The other thing that keeps Fortnite at the forefront of the online battle royale is its LTM (limited time mode).
They have had 40 since it the original launch.
Each one changes the loop of the game.
One added an air component where duos are in the sky and are in dogfights.
One member on the plane wing with weaponry.
They could be highjacked and downed.
Gamers are always waiting for “what’s next?! and keeping it fresh.
Epic brings further interest to the game by teaming up with Marvel and the NFL.
With Marvel, there was Thanos into the game and added the Infinity Gauntlet gameplay mode and the NFL add jerseys to all team and added a 20v20 LTM in recent times.
It also changes with seasonal content and has rewards for completed challenges.
With new content always on board, players keep returning.
While Fortnite is almost in constant update mode, it would not hurt it to slow down a little bit.
The constant change keeps many players happy but also causes lots of ups and downs in the gameplay depending on the release.
Overall it is a top of the line battle royale shooter game with good content and community buy-in.
While its free to play there is a really reasonably priced $10 pass for each season that offers cosmetic things to make the game even more fun.
The game has been dominating since its release and continues to up the challenge of this genre.
Performance keeps getting better and the building mechanics continue to be awesome.
While some would like to see less frequent updates, it is hard to say if the game would do as well since many play for that reason.
No matter how the game progresses at this point, the battle royale experience runs in competition with games like Apex Legends and PUBG but can certainly hold its own.
It continues to hold the interest of hardcore gamers, casual players as well as new ones as well.
People come back to hang out and play in this gaming community.
Fortnite is set to continue its online gaming sojourn with more updates, tweaks and engagements.
As players stay on, new ones come on board the creators will find ways to keep it fresh and adaptable.
There is no end in sight for what has become over 10 seasons of battle royale gaming.
