It’s the month of August and this is the third installment of the Porn Industry News series. This time, we will be taking a look at the war on porn in it’s different forms. We’ve followed the story of PornHub and payment processors in the US, UK’s politicians campaign against adult related content and we also have a diplomatic incident between Thailand and China caused by porn. Let’s dig in!
United States – Strong Push To Financially Destabilize Porn
There’s a major campaign in US against porn, and the main battle is between billionaire investor Bill Ackman and the Mind Geek conglomerate who owns PornHub along many other sites. Earlier this month, Bill Ackman and his new ally Laila Mickelwait, the leader of a christian group agains porn, have campaigned on TV and online to presure Visa and MasterCard into dropping MindGeek as a partner. Basically, what they wanted was to suspend all card payments towards PornHub and other sites in the conglomerate.
Unfortunately, they managed to convince Visa and MasterCard to do so. However, it seems like Discovery, the other major payment processor, is still on boat with MindGeek. The porn-bashing duo is pushing forward with their agenda, trying to limit the ways in which MindGeek can receive payments. Now more than ever we see the need of decentralized payment systems like crypto that allow people to spend their money online in a free and unrestricted manner.
UK – Politicians Are Bashing Porn
The latest news coming out of the UK war on porn features Tory MP (memer of parliament from the conservative party) Neil O’Brien coming forward with a populist statement targeted against academia. It seems like the cultural department of the University of Manchester has been researching the theme of shota erotica in Japanese adult comics and animations. The research purpose is to observe the evolution of sexuality in different mediums.
However, for the populist Neil O’Brien, this research study is decadent and shouldn’t be supported out of taxpayer money. And it seems like the university is not standing by the PhD candidate who ran the research study.
Thailand – Thai Police Arests Two Chinese Nationals On Obscenity Law
Following a military coup, Thailand has harshened the obscenity laws, a law against porn. The country already banned PornHub. And now it’s striking against porn production of all kinds, especially by foreigners. Thailand used to be a haven for independent and small porn production teams. Because of the many escorts who were more than happy to perform as adult actresses for a bit of extra cash on their regular rates.
But that practice is soon to be gone. Last week, a porn production duo from China was arrested in the middle of a porn shooting. Thai authorities charged the Chinese nationals per the obscenity law. And they are also caused by computer crimes. It is now illegal to introduce pornography into a computer system, which alone comes with a five-year prison sentence. We’ll see if this event will turn into a diplomatic incident, given the tense relationships between China and neighboring countries.
